Many of us have been anxiously watching the news of Russia’s ban on American adoptions of Russian children. There has especially been concern about what will happen to orphans with disabilities, considering these children have little chance of being adopted by Russian families. There have also been swings of despair and hope for the American families left in limbo as they wait for word as to whether or not they will be able to bring home the Russian orphans they were in the process of adopting when President Putin signed the adoption ban.
Outrage at the injustice of a political move that has so clearly punished an entire population of orphaned children is an understandable and typical response. It is easy to become discouraged. Please pray for the thousands of children in Russia who are in desperate need of families and for US families who want to bring needy Russian children into their families, but are now banned from doing so.
Amidst the frustration of muddy and often punitive politics, we are so thankful for the many Russian believers who are 1) protesting the US adoption ban, and 2) adopting themselves. Just yesterday, between 9,500 and 24,000 Russians gathered in Moscow in a protest march against the adoption ban! They accused the government of using children as political pawns and depriving them of their rights to a family.
